Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to get my teeth straightened?
On average treatment takes between 18 and 24 months. Some milder cases may be treated in 12 months.
Will orthodontic treatment be painful?
Most people experience some discomfort in the first week to ten days after treatment commences and occasionally for a few days after each adjustment. Most patients report that this discomfort is mild and we can give advice on how to minimise this.
How much will treatment cost?
The fee is based on the individual treatment you require (i.e., the length of time involved and the type of appliance required).
What age should my child be assessed at?
It is currently recommended that children are assessed at age 10 unless your own dentist has advised otherwise.
Will I need to have teeth removed?
Removal of teeth is sometimes necessary to relieve crowding and/or correct a poor bite. Each case is assessed individually and best practice is followed in recognition of the most recent scientific evidence.
Will my teeth stay straight after the treatment has finished?
At the end of treatment, your teeth will have been moved from their natural crowded or irregular position to a man-made straight one. Teeth move throughout life whether you have had orthodontic treatment or not. Post-orthodontic movement can be minimised by wearing retainers (night-time only) long-term.
Can I play sport while wearing braces?
Yes. However, it is generally advised that you wear a mouth guard for contact sports while wearing fixed appliances. We can provide a complimentary mouth guard when you have your appliances fitted if needed.
